A codec (coder-decoder, less commonly, “compressor-decompressor”) is a device or computer program capable of encoding or decoding a digital signal. Codecs can be implemented in software, hardware, or a combination of both. A codec encodes a data stream, signal or raw data for transmission, storage or encryption, or decodes it to uncompressed form.
