No one has ever numbered the revolutions which broke out in Europe in 1848. Counting those in the small German states, the Italian states, and the provinces of the Austrian Empire, there must have been over fifty. Out of all these outbreaks I have picked the ones that were most important in themselves and that showed most clearly the intertwining strands that made up the opinions of the age and the ways men acted. This book is called a social history because its aim is to show how men lived and felt a hundred years ago rather than to describe at length other important factors like constitutions, battles, or Lord Palmerston's foreign policy, all of which have been adequately treated by other historians.
